With CONCRETE, Maud Le Pladec delivers the third and last part of a long-term research project (2012-2015) about the New York contemporary music collective Bang on a Can All-Stars. Created for five dancers and nine musicians of the Ictus Ensemble, this last work will be premiered in November 2015 at the festival Mettre en Scène in Rennes.

In CONCRETE, the research focuses on the relation between music, movement and light. Based on “Trance”, the inaugural piece by the composer Michael Gordon, CONCRETE is a collaboration between choreographer Maud Le Pladec and scenographer Sylvie Mélis who will create the light design for the project. At the crossroads of choreography, "light show", contemporary music concert and installation, CONCRETE questions the status of the “fictional” world created by a work of art and its relation to the real world.

Een uur lang, explosieve, dissonante en repetitieve muziek op het scherp van de snee. De New Yorkse componist Michael Gordon slaagt erin met veel gevoel voor dramaturgie de puls steeds weer op het verkeerde been te zetten. Het resultaat is allesbehalve minimalistisch maar eerder een schizofreen ‘maximalisme’ door de manische opeenstapeling van met elkaar onverzoenbare ritmische patronen. Choreografe Maud Le Pladec – voor het lichtontwerp bijgestaan door Sylvie Mélis – laat de contouren vibreren. Op het kruispunt tussen choreografie, lichtshow, concert en installatie werkt CONCRETE als een niet hiërarchisch samenspel van muziek, dans en licht waarvan alle bouwstenen besmet lijken door hetzelfde virus.

C’est la guerre des nerfs : une heure de musique répétitive, violente et dissonante, comme une volière d’oiseaux mécaniques. Le compositeur Michael Gordon, cependant, ne développe pas un minimalisme vulgaire. Maître des rythmes trébuchants, il déploie une infinie subtilité dans l’art de brouiller le beat. La chorégraphe Maud Le Pladec — avec Sylvie Mélis aux lumières — fait ici trembler les contours : à la croisée d’une pièce chorégraphique, d’un light show , d’un concert et d’une installation, CONCRETE propose des logiques simultanées (de musique, de danse, de lumière), non-hiérarchiques, soumises pourtant à la même fièvre.
