Pianist
Brecht Valckenaers (b. 2000, Leuven) is a versatile pianist and composer who combines his love for classical and contemporary repertoire with his own compositions and improvisations.
He studied for eight years with Nikolaas Kende at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp and is currently continuing his studies with Claudio Martínez Mehner at the Hochschule für Musik Basel and Eliso Virsaladze at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.
Brecht has won prizes at several competitions, including the Steinway Piano Competition, Cantabile Piano Competition, Breughel Piano Competition, Concours de Piano Andrée Charlier, and the EPTA Piano Competition. In 2025, he received the Third Prize and the Prize for the Best Performance of a Dutch Work at the YPF European Piano Competition in Amsterdam. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestra and has performed in venues such as Bozar, Flagey, deSingel, Palais des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi, Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, and Bimhuis Amsterdam.
His compositions – characterized by a strong rhythmic inventiveness – have been featured several times on national radio and are enthusiastically received on YouTube.
After a celebrated appearance at Festival 20·21 in 2024 with his project Ex Nihilo, Brecht is delighted to continue his collaboration with the festival as Artist in Residence. Over the next editions, Brecht will perform all of Ligeti’s works in which the piano takes centre stage, alongside other projects.
His project Ex Nihilo was released as an album in February 2026 on Antarctica Records.
Driven by a desire to keep exploring and pushing his musical boundaries, Brecht approaches music as a language to be experienced in all its forms: reading and reciting through the performance of classical and contemporary repertoire, speaking through improvisation, and writing through composition.

Hij studeerde acht jaar bij Nikolaas Kende aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen en zet nu zijn studies voort bij Claudio Martínez Mehner aan de Hochschule für Musik Basel en bij Eliso Virsaladze aan de Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.
Brecht won prijzen op verschillende wedstrijden waaronder de Steinway Pianowedstrijd, Cantabile Pianowedstrijd, Breughel Pianowedstrijd, Le Concours de Piano Andrée Charlier en EPTA Pianowedstrijd. Hij speelde meermaals als solist met orkest en trad op in zalen als Bozar, Flagey, deSingel, Palais des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ en Bimhuis Amsterdam.
Zijn composities – gekenmerkt door een sterke ritmische inventiviteit – waren meermaals te horen op de nationale radio en worden enthousiast onthaald op YouTube.
Na een gevierde passage op Festival 20·21 in 2024 met zijn project Ex Nihilo, is Brecht verheugd om de komende edities Artiest in Residentie te zijn bij dit festival. Over de komende edities heen zal Brecht alle composities van Ligeti brengen waarin de piano centraal staat, naast andere projecten.

Brecht wordt gedreven door een verlangen om voortdurend te ontdekken en zijn eigen muzikale grenzen te verleggen. Hij ziet muziek als een taal die hij in al haar facetten wil beleven: het lezen en voordragen door de uitvoering van klassiek en hedendaags repertoire, het actief spreken door improvisatie, en het schrijven door te componeren.

Il a étudié pendant huit ans avec Nikolaas Kende au Conservatoire royal d’Anvers et poursuit actuellement ses études avec Claudio Martínez Mehner à la Hochschule für Musik de Bâle et avec Eliso Virsaladze à la Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.
Brecht a remporté plusieurs prix lors de compétitions, dont le Concours de piano Steinway, le Concours Cantabile, le Concours Breughel, le Concours Andrée Charlier et le Concours de piano EPTA. En 2025, il a reçu le troisième prix et le prix de la meilleure interprétation d’une œuvre néerlandaise au Concours européen de piano YPF à Amsterdam. Il s’est produit en tant que soliste avec orchestre et s’est produit dans des salles telles que Bozar, Flagey, deSingel, le Palais des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi, le Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ et le Bimhuis Amsterdam.
Ses compositions – caractérisées par une forte inventivité rythmique – ont été diffusées à plusieurs reprises à la radio nationale et sont accueillies avec enthousiasme sur YouTube.
Après une prestation très remarquée au Festival 20·21 de Louvain en 2024 avec son projet Ex Nihilo, Brecht est ravi de poursuivre sa collaboration avec le festival en tant qu’artiste en résidence. Au cours des prochaines éditions, Brecht interprétera l’intégralité des œuvres de Ligeti dans lesquelles le piano occupe une place centrale, parallèlement à d’autres projets.
Son projet Ex Nihilo est sorti en CD en février 2026 chez Antarctica Records.
