Tristan Perich's music always combines acoustic instruments and 1-bit microprocessors played through small individual speakers. The radical nature of his approach seems to want to reconnect with the spirit of 1960s Minimal Art, at a time when many so-called “minimalists” composers have chosen the "holy" or the "mystic" path. Perich isn't that cold or sentimental: there's also something adolescent about his 1-bit electronics, a tenderness for glitchy machines that's almost reminiscent of Steven Spielberg's fascination for aliens and robots.

PARALLELS is a negotiation between material simplicity and cognitive complexity, in the dazzling light of the rhythmic textures of tuned triangles and hi-hats.

PERICH's BIO

Tristan Perich's (New York) work is inspired by the aesthetic simplicity of math, physics and code.

The WIRE Magazine describes his compositions as "an austere meeting of electronic and organic." 1-Bit Music, his 2004 release, was the first album ever released as a microchip, programmed to synthesize his electronic composition live. His latest circuit album, 1-Bit Symphony (Cantaloupe, 2010) has received critical acclaim, called "sublime" (New York Press), and the Wall Street Journal said "its oscillations have an intense, hypnotic force and a surprising emotional depth."

As a visual artist, Perich has had solo exhibitions at bitforms gallery (NYC), Mikrogalleriet (Copenhagen), Museo Carandente (Spoleto), The Addison Gallery (Massachusetts), Katonah Museum (New York), Monster Truck (Dublin), LEAP (Berlin) among others, as well as group shows aound the world. His Machine Drawings, pen-on-paper drawings executed by machine, were described as "elegantly delicate" by BOMB Magazine.

Perich studied math, music and computer science at Columbia University, and received a masters from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at Tisch School of the Arts, NYU.

De muziek van Tristan Perich combineert altijd akoestische instrumenten en 1-bit microprocessors die via kleine individuele luidsprekers worden afgespeeld. De radicale aard van zijn aanpak lijkt weer aan te willen sluiten bij de geest van de minimal art uit de jaren zestig, in een tijd waarin zoveel zogenaamde ‘minimalisten’ zich laten verleiden door goedkope religiositeit. En Perich is niet echt zo kil: er is ook iets puberaal aan zijn 1-bit elektronica, een tederheid voor glitchy machines die bijna doet denken aan Steven Spielberg.

PARALLELS is een onderhandeling tussen materiële eenvoud en cognitieve complexiteit, in het verblindende licht van de ritmische texturen van gestemde triangel en hi-hats.

La musique de Tristan Perich consiste presque toujours en une rencontre fusionnelle entre instruments acoustiques et microprocesseurs 1-bit, lesquels sont diffusés à travers de petits haut-parleurs individuels. La nature radicale de l'approche de Perich semble vouloir renouer avec l'esprit du Minimal Art des années 1960, à une époque où tant de musiques dites « minimalistes » se laissent tenter par une religiosité bon marché. Mais Perich, après tout, n'est pas non plus froidement technologique : il y a même quelque chose d'adolescent dans son électronique 1-bit, une tendresse pour les machines et pour leurs glitchs, qui évoque presque Steven Spielberg.

PARALLELS est une négociation entre simplicité du matériau et complexité cognitive, dans l'éblouissante lumière des textures de triangles et de cymbales, tissées en d'inextricables patterns rythmiques.
