The Waves explores the various ways in which gestures suggest bodily experiences by expanding the research at the heart of my previous pieces. Movement on Movement was focused on gestures that explain or comment other movements. Removing transformed the perception of goal-oriented actions such as hitting, avoiding, throwing or grabbing, by preventing the audience to recognize these goals. For example, the dancers aimed at imaginary objects or interrupted their actions before they were completed, thus allowing the spectator to experience aspects of the action that would remain unnoticed if its goal would have been identified. Faits et gestes continued these experiments and added an exploration of the ways in which a gesture can recall the feeling of executing a movement: dancers created gestures that expressed their experience when executing another movement. All these projects are rooted in the intuition that a gesture that explains or suggests a movement can often communicate better what is at stake in this movement. In this new piece, I would like to pursue and expand this exploration of the ways in which a movement can refer to another movement: symbols, hints, suggestions, schemata, sketches, comments, explanations, experiential correspondences…

Soulier citeert Marcel Proust:
‘Het gebaar, de eenvoudigste beweging blijft opgesloten. Het is alsof het in duizend potten zit
elk gevuld met andere kleuren, geuren en temperaturen.’
De bewegingen die choreografe Noé Soulier heeft samengebracht – ‘een vluchtige blik, bruusk van richting veranderen, de inspanning om weer de juiste richting uit te gaan of in evenwicht te blijven’ – zijn erop gericht bij het publiek verre herinneringen te triggeren, door het onderbewuste fysieke geheugen te activeren.

Een verzameling eenvoudige en impulsieve gebaren die met een specifieke bedoeling worden getoond,
suggestief maar nooit voltooid – slaan naar, uitwijken, zich op iemand storten – en die de zes dansers en danseressen in een razend tempo en met hoge sprongen op het publiek afvuren. De voorstelling is uitgewerkt tijdens intensieve oefensessies met onze percussionisten Gerrit Nulens en Tom De Cock.

Soulier cite Marcel Proust : « Le geste, l’acte le plus simple reste enfermé comme dans mille vases clos dont chacun serait rempli de choses d’une couleur, d’une odeur, d’une température absolument différentes. »

Les mouvements que chorégraphie ici Noé Soulier – « un regard furtif, un brusque changement de direction, l’effort pour rediriger un élan ou pour rester en équilibre » – sont calibrés pour entrer en résonance avec de lointaines expériences du spectateur, activant sa mémoire corporelle diffuse. Soit une grammaire de gestes simples et impulsifs, lancés dans l’espace mais coupés de leur but, évocateurs mais inaccomplis – frapper vers, esquiver, se jeter sur – que les six danseurs et danseuses articulent en phrases aériennes et hautement rythmiques.

Le spectacle a été conçu au cours d’un long processus de travail avec nos percussionnistes Tom De Cock et Gerrit Nulens.
