Micro Breath of a Blue Lung is a 45-minute work built from a constellation of miniatures. It explores the timbral world of cetacean sounds, whose echoes reappear in Machiavelli’s sound-making devices. During the performance, these devices are brought to life by the performers; before and after the concert, they can be encountered as autonomous sound objects, each with its own sonic life. Micro Breath of a Blue Lung draws on the vocal, percussive and resonant dimensions of large marine mammals.
Processes of shaping and reshaping lie at the heart of Machiavelli’s practice. For several years, his work has centred on instrument building, DIY methods, and the development of new instruments as alternative sound surfaces, sites for sonic exploration. The objects, technologies and concepts he creates are not merely tools for producing sound: they invite performers and listeners alike into an active engagement with the music itself, as participants in a transformative musical practice.
