Ictus is een Brussels hedendaags muziekensemble, gesubsidieerd door de Vlaamse Gemeenschap. Het ensemble ontstond in het zog van een voorstelling met choreograaf Wim Vandekeybus. Sinds 1994 is het ensemble gehuisvest in de lokalen van het dansgezelschap Rosas (onder leiding van Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker) waarmee ictus tientallen producties realiseerde.

Ictus is een vast collectief van een twintigtal musici met een dirigent én een geluidsingenieur als vast lid van het ensemble. essentieel voor het gemengd akoestich-elektrische karakter van het ensemble. Ictus stelt regelmatig nieuwe concertformules voor : zeer korte of zeer lange concerten, becommentarieerde concerten, concertfestivals waarbij het publiek vrij circuleert tussen de verschillende podia (de befaamde Liquid Room-concerten zoals ze reeds te zien waren in Brussel, Wenen, Gent, Darmstadt, Hamburg, Luxemburg ...) of nog Blinde Dates waarbij het programma pas op het eine van de avond bekend wordt gemaakt.

Ictus stelt jaarlijks een Brusselse concertreeks voor in samenwerking met Bozar en het Kaaitheater. Nieuwe programma’s zien binnen deze context het daglicht die trouw opgevolgd door een gecultiveerd, maar breed publiek van theater-, dans- en muziekliefhebbers. Sinds 2004 is het ensemble ook in residentie in de Opera van Rijsel. Naast zthemaconcerten en educatieve projecten stelt het ensemble nagenoeg elk jaar een scenische productie voor Avis de Tempête van Georges Aperghis uit 2004, of La Métamorphose van Michaël Levinas in 2011.

Ictus ondersteunt sinds 2009 een academisch opleiding aan de School of Arts in Gent : een Advanced Master in de uitvoering van hedendaagse muziek. Het ensemble bouwde ook een cd-collectie op met een twintigtal titels (voornamelijk voor het label Cyprès). Het nam onder meer twee cd’s op met werk van Fausto Romitelli, als postuum eerbetoon aan deze wereldbefaamde componist. De recentste opnames bevatten werk van Levinas, Berio met Mike Patton, Fafchamps en Harvey. Samen met Oscar Bianchi en de Neue Vocalsolisten van Stuttgart opende Ictus een immateriële collectie online muziek. Die is beschikbaar op de pagina ictus.be/music/.

Ictus was eerder al te gast in de meeste grote zalen en op de meest gereputeerde festivals (Musica Straatsburg, Witten, Brooklyn Academy of Music, het Festival d'Automne in Parijs, Ars Musica, Royaumont, Milano Musica, Wien Modern ...). Rosas en Ictus werken binnenkort opnieuw samen rond Vortex Temporum, een van de meesterwerken van Gérard Grisey.

ICTUS est un ensemble bruxellois de musique contemporaine, subventionné par la Communauté flamande de Belgique. Né "sur la route" avec le chorégraphe Wim Vandekeybus, il habite depuis 1994 dans les locaux de la compagnie de danse Rosas (dirigée par Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker), avec laquelle il a déjà monté dix productions.

Ictus est un collectif fixe d'une vingtaine de musiciens cooptés. Un ingénieur du son est membre régulier de l'ensemble au même titre que les instrumentistes - signe d'une mutation irréversible des ensembles vers le statut mixte d'"orchestre électrique".

Ictus construit chaque année une saison à Bruxelles, en partenariat avec Bozar et le Kaaitheater. Cette saison permet d'expérimenter de nouveaux programmes face à un public cultivé mais non-spécialisé, amateur de théâtre, de danse et de musique. Depuis 2004, l'ensemble est également en résidence à l'Opéra de Lille. En plus d'un travail de fond avec l'Opéra (concerts thématiques et activités pédagogiques), l'ensemble présente chaque année ou presque une production scénique. Les amateurs se rappellent sans doute Avis de Tempête de Georges Aperghis en 2004, ou La Métamorphose de Michaël Levinas en 2011.

La question des formats et des dispositifs d'écoute est également mise au travail : concerts très courts ou très longs, programmes cachés (les Blind Dates à Gand), concerts commentés, concerts-festivals où le public circule entre les podiums (les fameuses Liquid Room présentéesà Bruxelles, Vienne, Gand, Darmstadt, Hambourg, Luxembourg....).

Ictus a ouvert un cycle d'études : un Advanced Master dédié à l'interprétation de la musique moderne en collaboration avec la School of Arts de Gand. L'ensemble a par ailleurs développé une collection de disques, riche d’une vingtaine de titres (essentiellement sur le label Cyprès). Dernières parutions : Levinas, Berio avec Mike Patton, Fafchamps, Harvey, Sarhan, Oscar Bianchi (avec les Neue Vocalsolisten de Stuttgart).

La plupart des grandes salles et les meilleurs festivals l’ont déjà accueilli (Musica Strasbourg, Witten, Brooklyn Academy of Music, le Festival d'Automne à Paris, Ars Musica, Royaumont, Milano Musica, Wien Modern, ...). Il est à noter que la prochaine collaboration Rosas / Ictus portera sur un des chefs d'oeuvre de Gérard Grisey, Vortex Temporum.

Ictus is a permanent group of 20 or so co-opted musicians. A sound engineer is a regular presence in their midst, as are the various instrumentalists – a sign of the massive movement ensembles are seen to be making towards the status of a mixed "electric orchestra". The issue of formats and listening systems has now been put in the mix: mini or maxi concerts, mystery programmes (the Blind Dates in Ghent), concerts with comments, concerts-cum-festivals where the audience is at liberty to roam around the stages (the landmark Liquid Room events showcased - or due to be unveiled shortly - in Brussels , Vienna, Ghent, Darsmstadt, Hamburg, Luxembourg...).

Ictus joins forces with Bozar and the Kaaitheater every year to develop a season with which to regale audiences in Brussels. The line-up of performances is an opportunity to experiment with new programmes to be offered to a non-specialist audience with broad cultural interests, people with an enthusiasm for theatre dance and music. The ensemble has also been in residence at the Lille Opera House since 2004. In addition to substantive work with the Opera (theme-specific concerts and educational activities), the ensemble also presents a stage production every year, or almost every year. Fans will surely remember the landmark Avis de Tempête by Georges Aperghis back in 2004, or La Métamorphose by Michaël Levinas in 2011.

Ictus has also formed a partnership with the Ghent School of Arts to launch a study programme, an Advanced Master's degree course, focused on interpreting contemporary music. Another string to the ensemble's bow is the collection of recordings it has built up. The 20 or so titles are mainly published by the Cyprès label. Two CDs dedicated to the work of Fausto Romitelli have posthumously helped to consolidate the international reputation of this composer. Recent releases are: Levinas, Berio with Mike Patton, Fafchamps, Harvey.
