folderhot1a18a4aFrom the 2009-2010 academic year on, the Faculty of Music - University College Ghent, in collaboration with the Ghent based Spectra ensemble & the Brussels based Ictus ensemble, will be is offering a new Master programme with emphasis on Contemporary Chamber Music. This is an advanced programme which runs over two academic years (60 credits/year) and can only be followed by students who already have at an academic master’s degree or an equivalent qualification.

This programme is designed for musicians wishing to combine further specialization in performing contemporary solo & chamber music with developing their professional career.

Coaching to enhance specialist and artistic skills will be given by renowned new music performers including members of the Spectra and the Ictus ensemble.

Further complementary theoretical and practical courses will be offered at the Conservatory of Gent Faculty of Music. In order to obtain this POST MASTER qualification students have to conceive a concert project, write a thesis and put on public performances. By achieving these threes goals, students will demonstrate their artistic autonomy, their ability to reflect and their outstanding technical and aesthetical international performance standards.

 

Requirements for admission:

Each applicant should have obtained a ‘Master in Music’ degree or recognised equivalent and will have to pass the entrance examination that will be held on the 11th of May 2011.

 

Tuition fee per academic year = € 2,000

A limited number of scholarships are available for the first year only and these will be granted to students obtaining the best results during the entrance examination (the scholarships are worth € 1,235).

This MASTER programme is open for individuals who want to work in various ensembles. It is equally possible to put in a collective application for an ensemble (tuition to be paid ‘per capita’).

 

The entrance examination

The entrance exam will take place at the Conservatory of Gent on the 11th of May 2011. All applicants have to prepare a 30-minute programme (1) and a written study proposal (2) which will be discussed briefly with the jury after the audition.

The programme for the audition should consist of music composed after 1950, including one work less than 20 years old. The programme may comprise chamber music or solo repertory or maybe mix of both.

More information on criteria for the study proposal:

This study proposal prepared by each candidate or each group should be no more than 2 pages long and will serve as a basis for the design of a two-year study project.

The proposal should demonstrate a sufficiently high level of knowledge and experience in the field of contemporary chamber music. In their proposals individual candidates may involve one or more chamber music ensembles (and the respective repertory) they work with.

However candidates do not have to limit their repertory to the ensembles they work with.

It may be that other ensembles are developed (or not) during the project depending on specific wishes.
